Bess Beetles, Passalidae

At first glance you will only notice their important role as a decomposer. But take a closer look and you will discover that this is one of the most sophisticated and fascinating little insects around. Unlike most other beetles, the Bess Beetles live in family groups where adults (mum, dad, older offspring) feed and protect the larvae. They also produce various sounds to communicate with each other. A truly remarkable group of insects.

Rhinoceros Beetle (Xylotrupes)

Family: Scarabaeidae
Subfamily: Dynastinae
Genus: Xylotrupes

Food

Adult rhino beetle will take ripe, opened fruit and tree sap.
You can well offer watered down maple syrup, watered down honey  or brown sugar water.
Very popular are also beetle jellies.
Grubs will live off the substrate.

Housing

A clear container (old aquarium would be perfect or a storage box, a lid with ventilation), around 40l,  10-15cm deep filling with substrate
(constantly damp; 1:1:1 rotten wood, compost, crushed dead hardwood leaves).

Sexing Larvae

Males have a so called “Organ of Herold” or  “Herold’s Organ” which is absent in females.
This structure will during pupation form the male reproductive system.
In 3rd instar larvae this can be used to determine the gender of the grubs.
It is a bit tricky though.

Green Diving Beetles

$ 25,- each (3 for $70,   5 for $100)      not available at present!

Cybister spec. (Family: Dytiscidae)

These beetles are voracious predators and scavengers.
They live in water bodies but adults are able to fly very well which they do in search for new hunting grounds.
They are fast swimmers, very active, pretty to look at and easy to care for.
In the wild they feed on other bugs, tadpoles and small fish.
The beetles store air in a chamber under their elytra and dive underwater to hunt for food and to find mates.
Females lay eggs in underwater stems of plants using their ovipositor.  The larvae are very aggressive predators and fully aquatic.  Pupation takes however place outside the water with the emerging adult beetle returning to the water.
Occurrence:  Australia wide.
