Crowned Stick Insect (Onchestus rentzi)

OUT   OF   STOCK

The Crowned Stick insect is at home in the coastal and mountain rain-forest of Queensland. The insect owes its common name to the quite unique backwards pointing structure on its head.  The species is rather small, easy to breed and very attractive.  Males are slender, reaching a size of about 82-87mm. Females are much heavier build, reaching around 102-110mm in length. Females cannot fly but males can.  Their flight is very beautiful.  Adults exhibit an interesting startle display.  If feeling threatened they flap their beautiful black-purple colored wings and produce a rustling sound.  Their general body color is brown in various shades to near black.  We do breed this species however pure in the very attractive and popular “lichen” color form.  Some animals additionally display shades of green.

These animals are very hardy which makes them in combination with their size most suitable for little hands.

Peppermint Stick Insect (Megacrania batesii)

OUT   OF   STOCK

The Peppermint is a very attractive and quite unique phasmid. In Australia the species occurs in only very few small patches in Cape Tribulation, Innisfail and Mission Beach and feeds (in strong contrast to the other phasmids) entirely on screw pine leaves (Pandanus ssp.). The name originates from the ability to exceed and spray in defence a milky white substance from a gland at the front of the thorax that happens to smell like peppermint. Most populations are parenthetic. Our group consists of females only.

These animals are more suitable for the intermediately experienced insect keeper. Children might require parental supervision/help as the food plant for this specie (pandanus) bears spines.
